What are 5G NR network slicing and edge computing?

5G NR Network Slicing

5G NR network slicing divides the physical network into a number of network slices, each of which is a logical network serving a specific service or customer need, to best meet the needs of a variety of different services.

For example, similar to the mobile broadband services offered by 4G LTE, a network slice can be constructed and support full mobility or another network slice can be constructed to support specific non-mobile, but low latency requirements for industrial automation applications.

These slices will run on a common, underlying physical core and wireless network, but from the perspective of the user application, they appear to run in their own separate networks. In many ways, network slicing is similar to configuring multiple virtual computers on the same physical computer.

For example, if more control-plane capacity is required, the control plane can be scaled separately without having to scale the user plane at the same time. In contrast, virtualization technologies will be used extensively in the core network of 5G NR, running on common computer hardware.

The adoption of these technologies provides a convenient, fast, and cost-effective solution for the 5G NR network to be able to serve all types of services flexibly.
