Which structures are typically employed in PCB WiFi Antenna Designs?

Inverted-F (IFA), Planar Inverted-F (PIFA), and Meandered Inverted-F (MIFA) structures are commonly considered for trace antenna designs because they are ideally suited when board space is limited and are also low-cost solutions.

How is the PCB WiFi Antenna designed?

The above-mentioned antennas are monopole designs with a quarter wavelength (λ/4) at the resonant frequency. Monopoles require a ground plane, which forms the other quarter wavelength to radiate efficiently.

WiFi antenna requirements for PCB layout wiring and structure

Antenna form and antenna location and feed point size recommendations

Built-in antennas are often used in several forms respectively, divided into shrapnel form chip patch antenna and PCB/FPC antenna.

Patch antenna form is a unified specification, there is a fixed size, pad location, and size according to the specific specifications of the antenna is also fixed.

In addition, there are design guidelines for specific types of antennas, such as clearance requirements around the antenna and recommendations for equipment size.

If using the shrapnel form, we recommend that customers use the PIFA antenna as the form of WiFi antenna, according to our experience, the PIFA antenna’s success rate and performance are better.

Antenna RF feed solder pads should be taken size 2&3mm, pads including peripheral ≥ 0.8mm area under all levels of PCB without copper. If the PIFA antenna, but also add a 2&3mm ground pad, the distance between the two pads is 2mm.

Antennas are usually located at the top of the device, the top of the PCB to start, all layers in this area of the ground are cut off 2 to 3mm, but belong to the antenna ground pad of the layer of the pad part to be retained.
Microstrip line from WiFi module to antenna matching circuitry

The signal transmission line from the WiFi module to the antenna matching circuit is a microstrip line with 50ohm characteristic impedance. To avoid losses on the microstrip line, the module should be as close as possible to the antenna.

The microstrip line must be sized according to the specific PCB. No crossed wires are allowed to pass between the microstrip line and the ground.
