What are the benefits of 5G NR?
5G NR supports scalable numerology to address different spectrums, bandwidth, deployment, and services;
Sub-carrier spacing (SCS) of 15, 30, 60, and 120 kHz is supported for data channels;
2nscaling of SCS allows for efficient FFT processing BW (e.g. 10, 20 MHz) BW (e.g. 100 MHz) BW (e.g. 200 MHz) BW (e.g. 400 MHz).
The first phase of 5G NR will still be based on OFDM waveforms
Although a number of candidate waveforms have been proposed for 5G, the first phase of NR uses orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms.
The specific form of OFDM used in the 5G NR downlink is a cyclic prefix, and OFDM is also the waveform used in the LTE standard for downlink signals.
However, unlike LTE, 5G NR also uses waveforms based on CP-OFDM and DFT-S-OFDM in the uplink.
Another difference from LTE is that 5G NR allows for significant variations in subcarrier spacing.
Whereas the spacing between LTE subcarriers is almost always 15kHz, 5G NR allows a flexible spacing scheme of 15kHz x 2n for the subcarriers.
In 5G NR, the maximum subcarrier spacing allowed is 240 kHz, which is only used in scenarios where the carrier bandwidth is 400 MHz.
