New Radio 5G main technologies
Rooted in the 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) and Wi-Fi standards, 5G NR is a new RF interface and RF access network (“NR”, or “New Radio”).
5G NR will be a key enabling technology for 5G communication systems, utilizing the best available technologies and tools to meet the 5G requirements set by the various standardization organizations. This chapter will explain some of the technical aspects of 5G NR so that you can understand the technology behind those.
Now that you may have a basic understanding of 5G, let’s dive a little deeper and learn about the technologies that support 5G. The backbone technologies of 5G are as follows.
Spectrum Technologies
Dynamic spectrum sharing technology
Extended Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), a method of encoding more digital data into multiple carrier frequencies
Multiple In Multiple Out (MIMO), which includes techniques that utilize multiple antennas simultaneously to increase data speeds and reduce errors
Beam focusing techniques, which combine RF signals from multiple antennas into one strong signal directed at a specific device or receiver
Small cell techniques or network densification, where multiple cell sites are densely placed to increase available capacity
In addition, these technologies will also significantly enhance existing 4G LTE networks, improving network flexibility, scalability, and efficiency.
Some of these technologies (e.g. dynamic spectrum sharing) have already been covered in previous chapters. Several other technologies may be new to you. We will cover each of these in the following sections.
