What is Cat-M1?
In R12/R13, 3GPP optimized for IoT several times.
The first was the addition of a new terminal class Cat.0 in R12, which dropped support for MIMO (multiple antennas), simplified it to half-duplex, reduced the peak rate to 1Mbit/s, and reduced the terminal complexity to 40% of a normal LTE terminal. However, although the channel bandwidth of Cat.0 terminals is reduced to 1.4MHz, the receive bandwidth of RF is still 20MHz (too large).
So, 3GPP added Cat.M1 grade terminals in R13, with both channel bandwidth and RF receiving bandwidth of 1.4MHz, further reducing terminal complexity.
