How does 3GPP design NB-IoT?

NB-IoT, even the current low power WAN (LPWAN), its design principles are based on compromise.

First of all, compared to traditional 2G/3G/4G networks, some of the main networks have three major characteristics:

1. Lazy

The terminal is very lazy, most of the time spent sleeping, the amount of data transmitted daily is extremely low and allows a certain transmission delay (for example, a smart water meter).

2. Stationary

Not all terminals need mobility, and a large number of Internet of Things terminals are in a still state.

3. Go upright

Unlike the “people” connection, the traffic model of the Internet of Things is no longer the following, maybe the mainline.

These three features support the technology “compromise” on low rate and transmission delay, thereby achieving coverage, low power, low-cost honeycomb network.

In order to cope with the increasingly strong Internet of Things, the International Mobile Communications Standardization Organization 3GPP decided to develop a new honeycomb Internet of Ciot: Cellular Internet of Things.

This new standard is to achieve four goals:

Ultra-low power, the terminal node can reach a battery life of 10 years

Ultra-low-cost, the target price of the terminal chip is 1 US dollar, and the module pricing is $ 2
